The President then called on Andy Duchan to give an update on the arrangements for our Poker Tournament slated for November 8^th.

Andy then requested that Volunteers would be needed on the day of the tournament to help out.  He said he’s made preparation to bring in Professional Dealers, Security would also be provided as well as a professional caterer.  He distributed flyers to all members and requested Catherine to put up a PDF copy on our website.

 

Mac Tapper introduced our guest speaker for the day. Jeffrey J. Hagen (Attorney at

Law).

His speech was centered mainly on PESA” Teen Court Project for Justice” a non-profit organization focus on helping troubled youths in our schools.  He said through the PESA’s projects: Students are provided opportunities to learn about their community through FIELD TRIPS funded by PESA where they meet elected officials, judicial officers, lawyers and other community representatives.  Also, Students learn about Fairness & Justice as Teen Court Members, through discussions about the Teen Court cases during Teen Court Club sessions, students obtain the skills that allow them to obtain the necessary information to make better-informed decisions.  He went further to say that PESA is able to turn the lives around of many “at risk” students so they can become productive members of our community through this project.  He ended his speech by asking for volunteers to help out with the project.  Any interested should contact him.  Please visit PESA’s website at www.pesaforbetterschools.org to learn more.

Guests:  Les introduced Bob Reiman with LAUSD and long-standing friend of Rotary, Lawrence Pleeth.  Carlos introduced his wife and they celebrate their anniversary on the 14^{th ,} and he is celebrating his 45^th birthday.   Liat is here with Marc.  Ron brought Sheila and Wynne told us he and Beverly became engaged on the 14^th.  Marie was accompanied by her Valentine, Jess.  Judy’s guest is Ariana.  Peter brought Mary and Alice introduced her future ex-husband, Eli.  Don brought “his Valentine.” And Jim introduced his current wife Joan.   Elaine claims that she and Shelly will be married 50 years in April.  Zoriada arrived just in time for the program.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The big fud-raiser “Service Above Self” will be on April Second.  Start planning for your donation to the Silent Auction so that we raise more funds for the club.

Wynne had boxes of candy for all the ladies, and directed any men there without their wives to be sure to take the box home.

PROGRAM:

Sharon Evans and Rick Rogers presented a wonderful “ragtime” melody program.  They began with 1917 “For Me and My Gal” and then, “On the Old Front Porch” – not skipping any of the verses.  From 1905 came “Cheyanne”, “Tipping through the Tumbleweeds,” and “Fit as a Fiddle and Ready for Love.”

“Lazy Moon” first came out in 1903, but was revived in 1960.  Eddie Canter  contributed “If You Knew Suzie Like I Knew Suzie” and “Making Whoopie.”

The Al Jolson’s “Tututusi Don’t Cry” and “Home in Pasadena.”

The last song, Rick had written and he had that on a CD, “Standing Right Beside a Rainbow.”

Rick played several different instruments to accompany their presentation, and Sharon also did, and her high soprano voice was beautiful accompanying and accentuating the melodies that many of us recognized from long ago.
