Guest Speaker:  Kathleen Ronald (President Speaktacular

Our guest speaker gave a very informative talk on CLUTTER.  She started by defining Clutter. Clutter is defined as: confused or disordered state or collection; to fill or litter with things in a disorderly manner; Clutter is caused by a persons belief that more is better. And so we hold on to things that may or may not even be useful to us.  She stated that there are different kinds of clutter; Physical clutter, relationship clutter, emotional clutter, mental clutter, social clutter and a lot more.  Clutter makes people sad.   Most of the time, it makes people feel guilty and embarrassed.  Clutter is not healthy.  She said that at the point of purchase of anything, you should first ask yourself, “do you need it” or “do you want it”?

Now more than ever, people are surrounded by things they don’t need. She mentioned that fact that there is an increase in physical clutter which is evident in the proliferation of self-storage units.  1 in 12 United States household is paying for a storage unit.

The same goes for relationship clutter.  Our society thrives on social relationship and encourages having many close friends and family members.  As a result, people may feel obligated to cling to people they do not necessarily, because society demands that they do. People amass hundreds of friends on Facebook despite not personally knowing half of them. People hoard relationships like people hoard items.  This is very unhealthy.  She encourages people to de-clutter their lives in order to live a happy and healthy life.

Judy Coates won our raffle for the day.
